Yet, just 10 miles away, Seneca Falls, the site of the first Women’s Rights Convention in 1848, steals the historical show of the suffrage movement not Geneva, New York. A massive restoration project launched in 1994 set as its goal the renovation of the building’s exterior to its original 1894 facade, and the interior to its 1931 eclectic art deco opulence. A marquee was removed from above the outside doors, revealing detailed busts of William Shakespeare and Edwin Booth.

It was built by one of Geneva's most respected citizens, William Smith. In the late 1960s the theater changed to the ownership of Panther Enterprises and was renamed simply The Geneva Theater. The theatre seats 950 on the main orchestra floor and 450 in the balcony. Additionally, the historic theater screens films on a 40 by 30 foot screen. If you are passionate about the performing arts and have a track record as a committed team player, The Smith wants to see your resume! In 1906, the building was used as part of the endowment for William Smith College, which would open in 1908. Hobart College (and the women’s college when it opened) took ownership of the opera house, and maintained ownership until 1912, when the property was bought by owner/manager B.B. From 1906, the building’s official title dropped the possession and was simply known as the Smith Opera House, the way that a lot of the younger generation knows it today.

Therefore, as the façade is the only remaining original feature of the 1894 opera house, this name remains etched in stone. Created by an award-winning production team, this wonderful show features an international line-up of some of the world’s finest circus artists in an enchanting and mesmerizing spectacle of entertainment. The A’s do not claim to be expert defenders of the Nevada Constitution, but they would like their money in a timely manner.

The union cannot start gathering signatures until the matter is resolved — and would need to collect more than 100,000 signatures by June 26 in order for the referendum to appear on the November ballot. However, the referendum becomes a little more of a long shot with each passing day. The A’s and their allies have objected to the proposed language of the referendum petition, and the matter remains unresolved after seven months in the Nevada courts. They and Tubman laid the groundwork for women’s suffrage but did not live to see the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920, guaranteeing women the right to vote. The 29th Annual Convention of the New York State Women Suffrage Association was held, in part, at the Smith on November 4th and 5th, 1897. Suffragist Susan B. Anthony spoke at the convention in the Smith as did the Rev. and Dr. Anna Howard Shaw, known for her work in the national suffrage and temperance movements and her work for world peace. The newspaper lists numerous other attendees, women known for their countless works to better society, of which the name, Harriet Tubman, Auburn, is listed. For 128 years, the Smith Opera House (the Smith) has hosted entertainment of various genres to enthusiastic audiences. Looking at decades’ old local newspapers, it also appears the Smith Opera House welcomed discourse on social movements including the fight for women’s suffrage.
